Fuerteventura Subversive Weavers

Tejedoras subversivas de Fuerteventura is a new look at textile art.

An initiative by Verónica Silva, where threads, fabrics and needles are her tools to approach the fine line that claims a new reading of the current patriarchal value systems in social, political and economic contexts.

Verónica tells us that the women who participate in these activities, while embroidering collectively, talk, and their dialogues remain between stitch and stitch; constructing a claim for equity in a patriarchal society. As Judy Chicago did when she reclaimed weaving, embroidery and sewing as artistic techniques, the Tejedoras Subversivas collective in Fuerteventura recovers these practices and materials from the domestic sphere, to transfer them to the public sphere, thus allowing their visibility.

Artistic proposals with powerful messages that invite reflection on contemporary social situations and collective empowerment.

The Government of the Canary Islands and the Department of Culture of the Cabildo of Fuerteventura are collaborating in this project.

We recommend that you follow them on their social networks to keep up to date with all the activities they organise, exhibitions and other initiatives.
